SACRAMENTO-SAN JOAQUIN DELTA CRISIS

ABOUT THE COALITION

The Coalition for a Sustainable Delta is a not-for-profit organization comprised of water users who depend on the Delta for conveyance of a large portion of their water supplies and individuals who utilize the Delta for aesthetic and recreational enjoyment. Coalition efforts are dedicated to creating a healthy Delta ecosystem by working towards a comprehensive solution to the many factors or “stressors” affecting the estuary. Coalition members recognize that the health of the estuary and its ability to function as a reliable water conveyance hub are intertwined, and as a result, the Coalition is committed to dual goals, as follows:

  • Promoting the long-term ecological health of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and its native species; and
  • Ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for California farms, businesses and residents.

The Coalition is funded by membership contributions that support a wide variety of research, education, and advocacy activities. Coalition efforts are based on the informed belief that persistent problems in the Delta stem from reluctance by State and federal agencies and lawmakers to tackle difficult Delta issues. While scientific studies and reports continue to acknowledge that invasive species, declining food availability, toxic contaminants, urban wastewater and storm water discharges, and unscreened in-Delta diversions have all had serious effects on Delta fisheries, little has been done to address these stressors. The Coalition is dedicated to addressing these often-ignored and difficult problems and ensuring government agencies enforce existing laws with respect to all activities in the Delta. To date, regulatory actions have focused primarily on the export pumps while many of the other stressors on the Delta and its native species have been ignored or overlooked.

Coalition efforts have been highly successful to date, including but not limited to the following:

  • Broadening the public dialogue and regulatory attention to include other stressors that have previously been ignored;
  • Advocating for a National Academy of Science (NAS) review of the flawed science utilized in the delta smelt and salmon biological opinions that regulate state and federal pumps;
  • Drawing increased attention to the significant impacts of wastewater discharges in and upstream of the Delta through the Great Delta Toilet Bowl report;
  • Holding accountable industries, municipalities and regulatory agencies that have contributed to the Delta decline without consequence for many years; and
  • Initiating extensive scientific research on the multiple stressors impacting Delta fisheries.
